wondering, wondering
This series of four-color separation screen prints delves into the enchanting realm of childhood while reframing adult concepts through the lens of familiar nursery rhymes. Drawing inspiration from the innocence and wonderment inherent in early years, each print is a visual exploration of the intersection between childhood whimsy and mature themes. Using childlike drawings rendered with overused markers and playful scribbles, the prints evoke a sense of nostalgia and simplicity, reminiscent of the doodles found in a child’s drawing or colouring book. However, beneath the surface lies a subtle layering of adult themes, woven within each nursery rhyme. The characters and text within the prints subtly allude to ideas surrounding death, alcoholism, and love - complex concepts that young and inexperienced minds can not yet fully grasp. By juxtaposing these themes with the whimsical imagery of childhood, the series invites viewers to reconsider the narratives of familiar nursery rhymes through a new position. The medium of printmaking further enhances the storytelling aspect of the series, evoking associations with the publication of children's storybooks and family tradition of passing down stories from generation to generation. Additionally, the prints had been deliberately applied to construct a mobile and night light, blurring the boundaries between art and function while adorning a space with a sense of the dreaminess of a child's imagination.
